I've been a songwriter for most of my life, and I found the writing of this song very challenging. Not only the language I used, but the literal nature of the song I wrote all sounded so wrong to me!
The song came quite quickly once I started writing, realising that I had a lot of anger in me about the state of the world these days. The recording itself has a bunch of lone take vocals layered in order to create a kind of live feel. It also makes it sound quite imperfect which is making me twitch a little at the moment.
I wrote this song in a beautiful Edwardian house in North London. It's one of my favourite spaces to write and record because you can almost feel the history in the rooms of the house.
Unfortunately I got quite a nasty cold during the writing and did the recording last minute at home.
It's a wonderful feeling to know that I can write what I want, when I want and pretty much perform the work (almost) anywhere without fear. It makes me feel a bit guilty that I have this freedom and I don't make more time and use of it. So many people making art around the world are doing it in such different circumstances.

American Singer/songwriter Lobelia has had a busy year. She’s been writing, touring and recording and has been running her own songwriter night in one of the UK’s best small venues, Tower of Song. The series is called Lobelia’s Lazy Sunday Songwriter Sessions and has featured such artists as Yvonne Lyon, Emily Baker, The Black Feathers, and the amazing Louise Petit. Whether playing her own songs or other people’s, Lobelia’s unmistakable voice and subtle guitar playing and not so subtle piano playing bring the stories-in-song to life, captivating audiences from Minneapolis to the Midlands.
WTF? How was this not in my Bandcamp collection. I must've bought it from a different account before! Anyway, I've been listening to this since before it was released and a decade on it's still a spectacularly perfect collection of songs. Sounds like a greatest hits album. Literally any track could be chosen as my 'favourite'. Truly astonishing. Steve Lawson
